Windows Search slows down in two distinct ways. The first is temporary: after a major update, the indexer rebuilds from scratch and search feels sluggish for an hour or two while it catches up. The second is structural: the indexer is misconfigured to scan far more than it needs to, or it's running on a mechanical hard drive that can't keep pace with modern workloads. The fixes for each look completely different.

This guide works through both categories, starting with the quick checks and moving toward the deeper fixes for the machines where simpler approaches don't hold. Most Windows 10 and 11 machines are fixed by Fix 2 or Fix 3. The Group Policy tweak in Fix 6 is for the ones that keep reverting.

Why Windows Search Gets Slow

Windows Search works by maintaining a pre-built index of file names, content, and metadata stored in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\. Fix 3: Switch from Enhanced to Classic Indexing

This is the fix most guides don't mention, and it solves persistent slow search on a surprising number of machines.

Windows 11's default indexing mode is Enhanced, which scans every file on every drive attached to the system. On a machine with large media libraries, a secondary HDD, or a NAS mapped as a drive, this means the indexer is constantly working through hundreds of thousands of files. Classic mode scans only the locations that matter for typical use: your user profile folders, the Start menu, and email.

Steps:
  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Searching Windows.
  2. Under "Find My Files," switch the toggle from Enhanced to Classic.

After switching, verify in Indexing Options (Control Panel) that the indexed locations look reasonable. You should see your user profile folder and maybe the Start menu. Remove any locations you don't actually search (network drives, external drives, media folders).

Tip: If you need full-text search across specific folders not covered by Classic mode, add only those folders manually under "Modify" in Indexing Options rather than returning to Enhanced mode for everything.

Fix 4: Move the Index Off Your Hard Drive

Search index performance is directly limited by the speed of the drive it's stored on. If your Windows installation is on an SSD but the index database lives on an HDD (or vice versa), you can move it.

  2. Under "Index location," click Select new and choose a folder on your SSD.
  3. Click OK. Windows moves the index to the new location and rebuilds.

Fix 5: Restart the Windows Search Service

When the search bar produces no results at all (not slow results, genuinely nothing), the Windows Search service has stopped. A service restart brings it back without a full system reboot.

Steps:
  1. Press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Scroll to Windows Search in the list.
  3. Right-click and select Restart. If the option is grayed out, click Start.
  4. Wait 30 seconds, then test the search bar.

While you're in services, check the Startup Type column for Windows Search. It should be set to Automatic (Delayed Start). If it shows Manual or Disabled, right-click, go to Properties, and change the startup type. A disabled service won't restart after reboot even if you fix it now.

  4. Also check "Do not allow locations on removable drives to be added to libraries" and enable it if USB drives showing up in the index is contributing to slowness.
  5. Run gpupdate /force from an elevated Command Prompt to apply changes immediately.

For machines where the indexer is consuming unusually high CPU even at idle, the setting "Prevent indexing when running on battery power" in the same Group Policy path can reduce battery drain on laptops, though it doesn't fix desktop performance.

After applying Group Policy changes, force a fresh rebuild (Fix 2) so the indexer starts with the correct scope from a clean slate.
